2014 Red Kia Optima

Upon first impression, the 2014 Kia Optima does not look like a four-door family sedan. Get behind the wheel, and the Optima does not feel like a family sedan. Kia took a risk with the Optima a few years ago, and it appears that the gamble is paying off. Striking style and a vast list of standard and optional equipment sets the Kia Optima apart from others in its class.

The 2014 Kia Optima sedan is largely unchanged from 2013. Kia unveiled the new design of the Optima a few years back, tweaking the overall design each year. There is more sound insulation for a quieter ride, the suspension is much improved and the gauges are much easier to read.

If you are in the market for a new family sedan, get down to Jack Daniels Kia today to test drive the 2014 Kia Optima. In a field that includes such tough competition as the Honda Accord, Ford Fusion, Mazda 6 and Nissan Altima, Kia has slowly crept near the top of the class, and seems poised to stay there for a while.

Standard and Available Options

The Optima comes in LX, EX, SX and Limited trim levels. Standard equipment on the base LX model includes foglights, full power accessories, height-adjustable driver's seat, Bluetooth phone connectivity and a six-speaker sound system with iPod integration. Tacking on the Convenience Package adds an eight-way power driver's seat, more sound-proofing in the front doors, a rearview camera, Bluetooth audio connectivity, and Kia's proprietary Uvo telematics system with voice command.

Standard equipment and available options on upper trim levels includes the following:

  • Power driver's seat
  • Upgraded windows
  • Keyless ignition/entry
  • Leather upholstery
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Eight-speaker Infinity sound system
  • Rear parking sensors
  • Blind-spot monitor
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • 8-inch touchscreen
  • Navigation system

Engines and Performance

LX, EX and SX models all come standard with a 2.4L four-cylinder engine that puts out 192 horsepower. Optional on the SX and standard on the Limited is a 2.0L turbocharged engine that bumps up the power to 274 horses. All variants of the Optima come with front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel economy for the 2.4L engine comes in at 23 city and 34 highway mpg. The turbocharged 2.0L gains power but loses some efficiency, coming in at 20 city and 31 highway.

Interior

The centerpiece of the Optima's interior is the Uvo telematics system, which is similar to Ford's MySync. Both are powered by Microsoft, and provide smartphone and MP3 player integration.

The cabin is spacious, with an almost European feel to it. Seat are comfortable, and there is a good amount of legroom for both front and rear riders. The sunroof can impact headroom, but taking the Optima for a test drive at Jack Daniels Kia should give you an idea of how much it takes away. The Optima boasts 15.4 cubic feet of trunk space overall.

Overall

Kia continues to make the tweaks and adjustments that the consumers are asking for, and by doing so have turned out a product that just keeps getting better with every iteration. SX and Limited models will come with a slightly more sports-tuned suspension, which some drivers may find a bit too firm. Otherwise, the 2014 Kia Optima is an all-around performer, and certainly worthy of being many people's top pick in the family sedan segment.
