The Kia Sorento and the Ford Edge have been popular mid-size SUVs for many years now. Both Kia and Ford have made improvements from year to year in order to keep these vehicles competitive in the family SUV category. Jack Daniels Kia in Fair Lawn, NJ has a great selection of both vehicles, so you can check out the similarities and differences for yourself.

Notable Features

The Kia Sorento was updated for 2014 with a revised suspension and an all-new chassis. Kia also added a new, direct-inject V6 option for drivers who don't want the 4-cylinder.

You'll now be able to fit five or seven people comfortably into the Sorento with the added seating, and you can drive with front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

The Ford Edge added the option to choose the EcoBoost Turbo four-cylinder, which improves the handling of the SUV. Ford also provides the choice between two different V6 engines, giving you more control over the vehicle you prefer.

The Edge seats five and has touchscreen controls to make the vehicle more classy and up-to-date. Both of these vehicles come equipped with a telescoping steering wheel and the option for an integrated navigation system.

Safety

The Kia Sorento did very well in safety according to the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) Crash Test ratings. The Sorento received 5 stars in 11 out of 12 categories. The only category in which it didn't receive 5 stars was the overall rollover rating, which is typical for SUVs. The good news is that it still received four stars in this category.

The Edge didn't fare as well but still rated 5 out of 5 stars in 7 out of 12 categories. The low side was 3 out of 5 stars in front-driver's, overall, and passenger. Two categories were rated four out five stars; those were rollover and overall rating.

The Sorento received a "good" rating from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) Crash-Test Data in every category, while Edge rated "good" for every category except Driver Head Protection and Head/Neck, where acceptable ratings were given.

Pricing and Warranties

The similarities continue with these vehicles in pricing. The lower-priced Kia can cost as little as $24,000, while the Edge can go as low as $28,000. The pricing is more similar on the higher end, where the Sorento can go for up to $40,000, and the Edge can go for up to $39,500 with all the options.

Both SUVs also offer the same standard warranties, including the Basic, Powertrain, Corrosion Perforation, and Roadside Assistance Coverage. Roadside Assistance is the only similar warranty covering 60 months/60,000 miles. The Basic warranty favors the Kia because of the 60 months/60,000 miles, while the Edge only offers 36 months/36,000 miles. The Kia also has an impressive Powertrain warranty, offering 120 months/100,000 miles, while the Ford protects 60 months/60,000 miles. The Ford gets the Edge with the Corrosion Perforation warranty due to the unlimited distance that is covered, while both protect for 60 months.
