In time, everything changes. Even in the auto world.  The styles of cars are much different, gas prices have skyrocketed, and even the aws of the road have changed with time.  And all the basic premise remains the same, even engines need additional love and care. What's under the hood of a 2014 model is much different than what's under the hood of a car that 10, 20 or 30 years old.   With that being said, with change in engines comes a change in oil treatment.

So?What's So Different?

The type of oil recommended for new cars is different than that from the past.  Sure the weight is the same, but new oils have conditioners in them that protect against wear and tear.  Cars within the past decade or so are being engineered to run on synthetic oil rather than conventional oil. Synthetic oil is designed to work more efficiently.  Once upon a time you needed an oil change every 3,000 miles. That is not the case with most synthetic oils.  They have upped the ante between 5,000 and 7,000 miles before a change.   Some synthetic oils don't need change for up to 15,000 miles!

Older cars were engineered to run on conventional oil.  Conventional oil is composed of a thicker molecular structure and does not last as long as synthetic.  However, it is cheaper and does get the job done well.   Many experts believe that it is not wise to put synthetic oil into in an older.  The seals are have a different gap ratio to metal ratio and can cause serious problems.

In Conclusion?

At the end of the day every engine is different.  You should not blindly decide on which type of oil to use, or when to get an oil change.   A quick way to find out what type of oil your car uses is by reaching into that glove compartment and pulling out the owner's manual.   The owner's manual  will have all the information you need to make sure you keep your engine running as long as possible.
